DIVORCE
Legal action to dissolve a marriage.
PROPERTY DIVISION
Assessment of all financial assets in a marital estate and the division of those assets between the parties in a divorce action. Common assets of a marriage include property like homes, bank accounts, vehicles and retirement assets. Property division can become more complex in instances where the parties may have interests in property like a business, or when one or both parties assert a non-marital interest in property.
SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE
Previously or otherwise known as “alimony,” this is the calculation and award of ongoing financial support from one former spouse to the other.
SPOUSAL MAINTENANCE MODIFICATIONS
Requests for increase, decrease, extension or termination of previously awarded spousal maintenance.
CHILD SUPPORT
The calculation and establishment of an ongoing support obligation for the basic, medical and child care needs of children.
CHILD SUPPORT MODIFICATIONS
Requests for recalculation of an established child support obligation based on changes in circumstances.
CHILD CUSTODY
Award of legal responsibility to one or both parents for the care and control of their child or children. There is a distinction between legal custody and physical custody.
PARENTING TIME
Previously or otherwise known as “child visitation,” parenting time is the actual time a child or children spend in each parent’s care.
PATERNITY ACTIONS AND COMPLEX PATERNITY MATTERS
Legal action to establish a parent’s relationship to a child or children when the parents are not married. Once the parent-child relationship is established paternity actions can then address custody, parenting time and child support.
THIRD PARTY CUSTODY
Award of legal responsibility for the care and control of a child or children to an individual who has an appropriate connection to the child or children but is not the biological or otherwise traditional parent.
GRANDPARENT VISITATION
Award of time with a child or children to an individual who has an appropriate connection to the child or children but is not the biological or otherwise traditional parent.
ORDER FOR PROTECTION
Request for a Court order restraining contact between members or former members of a family or household based on incidence(s) of domestic violence.
